Eating disorder suffered by science students

I would like to propose the following issue to be researched, it is to look into the issue of congestions in Science Faculty Canteen during lunch peak hour and propose feasible solutions to this perennial problem with the influx of ever increasing size of student cohorts.

The rationale of me choosing this particular issue is that a lack of seating often forces science students to skip their lunch due to our rigid timetables. Alternatively, students would buy takeaways and have their meals in study areas like the benches along the walkway, this secondary effect deprives students who want to revise, a revision location. Consequently, this kind of “spillover” effect poses efficiency problems, as students who want to study, can’t find a place to do so; students who want to have their lunch, would be forced to have it in study locations. Another concern that may arise with high volumes of takeaways will be the use of plastic containers that are likely to pose environmental problems.

As a science student, I have been affected by this problem. Therefore, I would like to propose that there should be addition of food stalls with seatings or café to be located at the other corners of the Science Faculty, so that the student population could be redistributed to the interest of all science students.

A survey targeted at science students, should be carried out to gauge the student’s interest in this issue and whether the general populace thinks that the canteen congestion is a serious problem that affects not only their health and happiness but also their academic performance, through primary and secondary spillover effects. Also, the survey should include possible locations for the new café (something like Megabitez). The general idea is to redistribute the student population across various locations to reduce congestions, essentially decentralising meal provision services.

Here, I would like to hear comments from the reader about the practicality, feasibility and whether it is of the student’s interest to look into this issue. And also, what do you expect the survey results to be if it is carried out.

Hi Joanna,

I agree with your observations and I believe your topic has much content we could talk about. Every time I think of eating after our ES2007S class, I would never think of eating at the science canteen because the length of the queues just turns me away. I do end up eating at Megabitez sometimes because the queue there is generally shorter, it's easier to find seats, and it's air conditioned. However the prices at Megabitez is generally more expensive.

I believe that most students like you, would like to see an expansion of the science canteen and an increase in the number of food vendors. Working on this topic would help with gathering suggestions from the masses to solve this problem, and ideas for locations of having another cafe like you mentioned.

Hi Joanna

Personally as a science student, I have never actually met such problems in the Science canteen. My clique of 5 have always managed to get seats and have comfortable meals. However, this could largely be due to our time table such that we are fortunate enough to avoid the conjested lunch hours. I have, however, observed that the canteen is most packed between 12-2pm when the queues at every stall are equally long. Hence I can really understand the frustrations you and most students are facing.

The suggestion of setting up more food stalls with seatings and cafes are not impossible, but it might be quite diffcult to find space to accomodate more food places in Science faculty. Also, cafes generally charge at higher prices hence students may still actually prefer to wait for available seats and dine in the crowded canteen.

I have also observed that some students actually occupy the canteen seats for studying and using of laptops during lunch hours. In such cases, I feel that they should be reminded to work elsewhere (in the library etc) and allow more people the opportunity to dine in the canteen. Also, some people do not leave straight after their meals but instead remain behind to continue chatting with friends. Such students should also be reminded to show courtesy to those who are really in need of seats in the canteen.
