As a final point....

After three fruitful months, the semester would be concluding soon. But I realised that what I have learnt in the Professional Communication Course (ES2007S), would only serve to be the beginning of a whole new learning experience for me with regards to the path of effective communication; the end of the course does not signify the end of learning good communication skills. Personally, I think that this course have given me valuable insights on how individuals should conduct themselves and communicate with others, and these insights would grant me a better vision and wisdom in improving myself and learning from others. Communication isn’t just a skill that can be acquired from merely reading a textbook or studying it in a course, it is a skill that requires the individual to delve into the fray and learn from the action (or rather the interaction). It is like learning how to swim or riding a bicycle. We can all read books on how to do it, but the best and most effective way is of course to jump right into the water or getting onto a bicycle and start peddling with vigor. Likewise, communication skills would only be honed through much practice. My opinion is that few people or none at all are born to be natural communicators, most of us simply learn as we grow up. Therefore, I think it is hard to be an effective communicator just by reading the ES2007S textbook that we bought or just by sitting through the tutorials. Much needs to be followed up and I believe that as life would have granted me the opportunity to meet up with more people, I would be able to better appreciate what I have learnt in the module.

A revisit to my first blog post has brought to me several reflections. My opinion on “why a developing effective communication skill is important” has not changed much. And from the insights gained from this module, I am pleased to mention that my initial intuition on effective communication was not far from what I have learnt. The core of communication still remains the same and I feel that it will be never-changing. The core of communication still consist of a sender, a message (and its medium) and the receiver. This fact will never change and technological advances have merely altered its facet but never its core. However, through taking this module, I have increased my knowledge on the different facet that communication can take on. Communication is not only about the physical and tangible way to convey our messages (like writing a text, speaking or our body language) but some of the “intangibles” (like personal bias and choice of communication medium) do play a sizable role in making communication better.

Last but not least, I would like to thank Ms Happy Goh for her guidance throughout the course and my project group mates, Ruisheng and Stephany, for their support and hard work for the module project.

Hi Joanna,

After reading your blog, I can really sense your understanding of how important communication skill is to you. I agree with you that ES2007s have given us valuable insights on how ones can communicate with other more effectively and the way in how we can present ourselves better in front of others. Of course, the module only serves as a beginning of a whole new learning experience for us. With these skills we have acquired from the module, I hope we will be able to be a better communicator and facilitate our ability to understand and work with people around us.

Anyway, I think you did a great job for your oral presentation. Thumb up for you!!

May you succeed in whatever you do and of course, become an effective communicator.

Cheers,
Xinyi

Hi Joanna,

I agree with you that the end of the course does not signify the end of our learning towards effective communication. I believe that we definitely have much more to learn in the future when we step out into the workforce. So let this serve to be a head start for us amongst our peers who have yet to take this module!

And I also like your analogy about the aspect that communication is not just about sitting down at home to read the textbook. That is also one of the reasons why I am indeed grateful that this module allows us to put into real practice the skills we have learnt in class. I am sure that everyone will take home some knowledge at the end of the day!

Wish you all the best for your coming exams!

SM

Hi Joanna,

As I write my comments, I am actually exercising what I have learnt from the module. I am typing in a manner as clear and concise as possible and I guess this is further proof that we are only beginning to start exploring into the fascinating realms of communication. I totally agree with you about improving effective communication as we practise more of it.

The medium that we use is negligible if we only consider the fact that we are trying to relay a message. I agree with you that the core will never change, but as we evolve and progress, I feel that more effort has to be out into effective communication to stamp out any possible miscommunication. It will be extremely easy to type an angry email since we will not receive the receiver's wrath till a few days later, and we are capable of so much destruction in the heat of the moment.

All the best for your future endeavors!

Regards,
Derek

Dear Joanna,

I'm glad that this course has given you as much insight as it has to me. This module has definitely pushed us to look for different ways to further improve our communication skills. You are right that intangible skills have to be honed through practicing, and throughout the module, I do feel that I have become a more effective communicator. Through our assignments and group activities, we have learnt to put our ideas across, either through writing or through speech, and we have learnt to put our individual opinions together and produce the best work we can.

Like you, this module has opened up the doors to the importance of effective communication for me.

It was great knowing you. All the best in everything you do!

ES2007S had provided the catalyst and general guidelines to help us in the path to becoming successful professional communicators. It is wonderful to know that you have benefited from this course. Lastly, I hope you were not scared by me during the interview. Take good care of yourself and good luck to your examinations.
